Longlegs and the Pirate With No-Nose
The interactive storybook app is a true representation of a classic pirate fantasy and myth. The book’s pages are bright and each character has its own unique personality. My five year old’s favourite character was ‘Cannonball’, the first mate with the soft touch. With mermaids, princesses, kidnapped children and a magical island it is actually the sort of tale real pirates would tell around a table! The interaction on every page has a very clear read narration (in 6 different languages might I add) and a really good soundtrack and sound effects. I was very impressed. The app is optimized for both iPhone and iPad so you don’t have to buy two different versions.
On the ‘home’ screen, if you go to options, you enter a fun and creepy room which has an info tab (click on the lamp on the desk) and this explains where to swipe, also click the scull to go to toggle narrator on/off. Also if you swipe down you can skip back and forwards to favourite pages, each are shown as a thumbnail flowing over rock which was nice. This is an easy app to use and is full of little touches and surprises that will delight adults too!
Overall, I found that the app will engage children’s motor skills, appeal to their imagination with the captivating illustrations and interaction that you can have when you click on the pictures. The vocabulary that is used is also very varied and we learnt a whole range of different names for sea creatures!
From the Developer
Longlegs and the Pirate with No-Nose is an interactive book for kids, translated in six different languages (Italian, English, French, Spanish, German, Japanese). The brilliance of this application is definitely in the story, striking for its originality as well as its illustrations, all product of the imagination of Francesco Tosi. But what will surely captivate the little ones is the interactivity. The app allows you to touch, move, listen, live alongside the characters, and embark on a great adventure into the wonderful world of Calabi-Yau
The pirate Rakam, nicknamed “No-Nose,” kidnaps the son of a princess to feed the alligators he lovingly raises on a magical island called Calabi-Yau. Cannonball, first-mate of the evil pirate, moved by compassion, saves the baby from his sad fate, taking it away from his tormentor and leaving him adrift in the ocean. The giant Longlegs also becomes aware of the incident and decides to come to the aid of the little castaway. The giant, after some misadventures, finally arrives on Calabi-Yau, with the intention to rescue the little prince.
Longlegs and the Pirate with No-Nose is also a fun app for older ones. There are many surprises, eye-catching animations and different opportunities for learning and discovery. You can interact with the story, decide whether to read alone or listen to the narrator: there are six different voices, warm and profound, one for each language in which the story is translated. The originality is also expressed in the music and sound effects, created specifically for the application, and help give the story the right atmosphere. Listen, touch, move, read and play, laugh and learn, exploring the island of Calabi-Yau with Longlegs is certainly an adventure not to be missed!
