Teacher Review

As the name suggests this app is about Klatoo’s adventure around a set of learning games in their rather cute flying saucer. The game is designed to test the user in their understanding of the KS1 Science National Curriculum. The intention of the programme is very laudable, but the implementation has a bit to be desired.

The graphics are very good, bright cheerful and cheeky. The finger drag to move to particular knowledge areas is a pleasant experience and the sections are in line with the National Curriculum for Science. The landing of the spacecraft onto the desired spot does fill you with an anticipatory excitement, the user is then carried to another pleasantly laid out scene rich in graphic details. I particularly like the ‘Materials’ section which has a series of pipes and portholes inside the flying balloon, reminiscent of the steam punk genre.

However, when you click on the various boards for each subsection, the narrative of the story is somewhat mutated into at times, a rather bland series of drag and drop objects and sorting a number of labels. This can become dull and repetitive. The fact that the drag and drop can be completed by simply guessing detracts from the purpose of the game. The labels for the diagrams could also be impenetrable for poor readers. An opportunity is lost here for a narrator speaking the words.

Overall the game will test the child in the correct key words for the KS1 Science curriculum, but it fails to excite or teach, which are the perquisites of a good game. More work needed here to explain the concepts behind the words.

By the way, I was expecting a ride on the rocket at the end, have I missed something?
