Kids Zoo is a reference app for introducing children to a wide range of animals, including sealife, insects, birds and more. The use of image and sound, coupled with numerous interesting animal facts seeks to maintain an interest in the subject, though the use of unrelated adverts may throw users at first. This app has received an EAS Certification of 4 Stars.
Kids Zoo is a simple reference app for helping children learn about their favourite animals, as well as some animals they may never have heard of – I certainly hadn’t heard of a few! On entering the app the user can pick a category such as birds, insects or reptiles. They can also choose to look through all of the animals, or animals they have marked as a favourite. Upon selecting a category, the user is shown a fact card relating to an animal. This fact card will have the name of the animal, a picture, and a number of related facts such as “Owls are active at night” or “A walrus can sleep while it swims”. In addition to this, when opening the fact card a narrator will pronounce the name of the animal, and the app will play a short sound clip of a typical cry made by the animal.
These functions are good for younger children, as they act as a useful introduction to each animal, letting the child recognise the animal through name and appearance, as well as teaching them how to say their name. The interesting facts should also help pique the child’s interest and give them a reason to care about the information. In addition to these, the app can be run in English, French, Spanish, Hindi, Chinese and Russian, so although the animal facts are missing in these languages, the app could also be used to help teach animal names in these languages.
The app also comes with a child lock to stop children accessing the settings or leaving a particular section. While I personally can’t see a reason for doing this within the body of the app itself, this is a good idea for the app settings, though the lock can be thwarted by holding down the settings icon for 3 seconds. In addition to this, the app does contain non-targeted advertising, which may seem off-putting, though this only occurs on initially opening the app. Despite this, these two annoyances do not detract from the main content of the app, so if you can live with advertising you should have no problems.
In short, this app serves a very specific purpose, but by delivering it with a simplistic, easy to use interface and an array of interesting facts, it hopes to help children have fun while learning.
