GCSE French Prep Flashcards Exambusters
GCSE French Prep Flashcards is a helpful revision aid that can be used anywhere. Great for quick sessions on the bus, or just before going to bed, this app will help you form quick associations between a key term and its meaning. More progress tracking options would be a great plus, but this app has received an EAS Certification of 5 Stars.
GCSE French Prep Flashcards is a reference app for GCSE level students. The app contains a library of virtual flashcards with a term on one side and the meaning, or an example, of that term on the opposite side. Through the “Review” section of the main menu, users can view flashcards from a wide variety of topics, starting in a randomly chosen position. Initially, only a handful of these topics are available, but the rest can be downloaded for free. While reviewing these cards, users can flip cards by tapping on them to reveal their meaning, cycle through the deck, remove cards from the deck that they feel they have enough understanding of, or search for a specific key term.
In the “Word Jumble” section users are given a series of randomly assigned flashcards containing a description, as well as a collection of letters at the bottom of the screen. For each card, the user must read the description on the card and then, using the jumbled letters, give the key term to go with the description. The app can give the user three hints for each question; each hint being a letter of the term, or the user can give up and have the app fill the term in for them. Choosing this or getting the answer wrong results in getting no points for that particular card, with one point given for each correct answer. At the end of the jumble, users receive their total score, and (hopefully) a cheer and words of encouragement.
In the “Quiz” section, users are given a series of random flashcards, but this time with the term side facing up. Users are told “you are on your honour”, and then let loose to try and describe each term. Upon flipping the card, the user is given two buttons, one a tick and one a cross, and asked if they got their answer right. This likely allows for a small amount of error or creative freedom, as the user is unlikely to need to remember the answer word for word. Once this quiz is complete, the user is given their total score and a lettered grade, which they can find in the “Scores” section.
Besides this, users can use the “Search” option to search for specific words, phrases or terms and revise only those terms they know they need to look into more. From the “Settings” section the user can also reset their quiz scores, replace removed cards and buy additional cards.
This app is definitely more for revision than for learning new information, but the flashcards have a wide variety of content, occasionally accompanied with clear, helpful diagrams. The word jumbles work very well as a memory aid, though I felt the quiz section could use a slightly more rigorous testing method. The search worked very well, I couldn’t find any irrelevant results. I have no real criticisms of the app; it advertises itself specifically as a flashcard app, and it performs very well for this. That being said, with some more advanced result tracking and more testing methods, this app could reach great potential.
