Teacher Review

Upon opening the application, the user is shown a beautifully designed interface that is simple and effective with the Kizzu opening splash screen. The music is friendly and inviting.

As with all app apps from Kizzu that are on the Big Clever Learning platform a class or user can be set up. This is done via a class or user code and needs to be set up before the application is used. This is a great feature as parents and teachers can monitor the progress of the child or class. This enables you to monitor sessions, average sessions per pupil, number of active pupils, usage at home vs. school, average session time and total session time. This data can also be shared. The child or pupil is displayed in the top left of the home screen.

The home screen shows a settings option in the bottom left hand corner where we are asked to tap three times to gain teacher and parent access. We would like to see a higher level of security here to access this information such as a multiplication question or 3-digit code. Once accessed, the user can change the voice from English to American, mute the sound, and mute the narration. Once the play button is pressed, the app displays 24 animated characters with two action/verb phrases for each. There is a home bottom top left and the arrows or a swipe will let you scroll through the characters.

Each character has an adorable animated sequence that can be utilised by pressing the character. The narrator describes the action and the action/verb is highlighted. We would like to see the option to repeat the narration again for the child or for each word to be narrated if pressed. The characters explore the following verbs/action words; crying, sleeping, dancing, eating, speeding, cleaning, laughing, bouncing, changing, catching, napping, playing, waving, barking, listening, hanging, singing, flying, sailing, rocking, hopping, swimming, blowing, quacking, diving, rising, setting, smiling, reading, shouting, steering, climbing, driving, floating, bursting, saying, waving, taking, landing, baking, singing, wearing, roaring and stomping.

We did notice that some of the words were repeated and we found that some of the actions did not compliment the character, for example “The Policewoman is saying hello or waving goodbye”. We felt that an opportunity was missed here for more appropriate action words such as “The Policewoman is blowing her whistle or showing her badge”. Please note the bottom right arrow does not function on the dinosaur character.

We enjoyed the simplicity of the app that will really encourage children to recognise key words and repeat this as often as they like. The app focuses on Literacy – Writing and word recognition, Physical development - Moving and handling and Understanding the world using Technology. The app gives children confidence to explore the application whilst having fun and the developers can be commended for the quality of the animations. The developers may want to consider a leader board or rewards system within the application to encourage progress and competition. Overall we really enjoyed this application.

Action Words for Preschool Children

Children learn to recognise ‘action’ words as they play with this app, which is one of a new Kizzu series by Sherston Early Years.

As part of the UK curriculum, action words are taught to young children by introducing the concept of verbs in a simple and familiar way. Our First Words app helps children learn and recognise up to 48 new action words while playing a fun new game.

How it works

Through 24 adorable animations, children interact with various characters by tapping or swiping the screen.

Each time the child interacts with the app, the character will perform a fun action. This encourages little ones to learn new action words while they play.

Children are introduced to the sounds of the words through a clear voiceover, which is available in both British and American English. This can be repeated as many times as the child likes, so it won't be long before they are recognising and repeating the words themselves.
